How To: Battlegrounds

The first thing to be aware of is that Battlegrounds exist for two purposes. The first one is to drive the Rise of Balur storyline. Your battleground level determines your maximum Saga Quest level. The second reason is to convert your armies into more powerful units via Spoils of War. This conversion is based on chance, the only details of which are found in the game's Guide.

The second thing to be aware of is that you will lose troops, lots of troops. Unlike PvP where you will often save a third to half of your force should you lose a fight (unless facing an overwhelming force) in BGs your army will fight to the death.

What are BGs?
Battlegrounds (BGs) are a staged combat against computer controlled armies, in RoB's case against the demonic armies of Balur.
The strength of your opposition is determined by the level of the bg as is the general value of any Spoils of War you might receive from the bg.
There are two types of bg, Raid and Reinforcement in which you need to send offensive or defensive units respectively at a power level sufficient to defeat Balur.

How do BGs work?
Find a bg via the map or Eagle's Nest, note whether it is a Raid or Reinforcement. Send an army of the correct type and background combat calculations will be made to determine a winner.
BGs appear to have a fairly balanced opposition in terms of unit types but I haven't sat down to work out the exact values.
Note that you don't have to send just offensive units to a raid or defensive units to a Reinforcement but individual units are quite weak in their opposite stat and you will incur higher losses. But sometimes you'll see that you have nearly finished a BG but have run out of the correct unit types, in which case you may want to try sending whatever you have left to try and eke out a win.

What are Spoils of War?
Spoils of War are a key mechanic of bgs, it is through the Spoils that you can upgrade to more powerful units and sometimes even increase your armies overall power.
Essentially by sending large numbers of food hungry units like archers or pikemen you have a chance to be rewarded with units like barbarians, great lords all the way up to dragons and griffins. The type of unit you get is broadly based on your bg's level. Lower levels are far less likely to give the more powerful units and vice versa.
I am unaware as to how the exact number and types of units are rewarded. Sometimes I have received half of the overall power that I have lost and other times I have doubled my power. Usually I get the same type (offence or defence) as I sent but sometimes I will also get a smaller number of the opposite type and sometimes some or all of the units are replaced with primary resources.

When should I do Battlegrounds?
Early on in the game do as many bgs as you can remembering that following the highest level bg progression will give you 2 skull runes for each one and an Amelia's Quest reward, make sure you claim your reward before doing the next bg! Once you are doing level 20 bgs or thereabouts I would start to focus on  doing most, if not all your bgs during the appropriate League Quests and Tournaments. That way you are getting the most reward for the risk (ie. not getting any Spoils) you are taking.

When shouldn't I do Battlegrounds?
Don't do bgs when you don't have units to lose
Don't do bgs if it leaves you unable to farm for rss
Don't do bgs when you have an incoming attack
Don't do bgs with Legendary units

Tips
Think of bgs as potential upgrades, not guaranteed upgrades
Maximise your return
Make sure you win (send a big enough army)
Be prepared to lose (everything when you lose, almost all your army even if you do win, and get no Spoils)
Do post screenshots to your league members when you get some sweet sweet Spoils
Do make a note of how much power Balur loses at each level (and feel free to send the data to lazy ol' me)
